Issue

In case a Gateway appliance has to be replaced by identical hardware, e.g. due to RMA.

Solution

NOTE: For RMA licensing to correctly move from the old appliance to the new appliance, the new appliance must be added to the same SteelConnect Manager (SCM) Organization as the old appliance.  If you desire to move the new appliance to a different Organization or SCM entirely, you must first add it back to the same Organization and verify that license has been associated with the new device.  Once the license is associated with the new appliance, you can move it to another Organization or another SCM using an Unlock code.  For more information about Unlock codes, please see the following knowledge base article S28516.

Scenario 1 (initial provisioning via DHCP)

[Condition]

The new gateway is able to obtain an IP address via DHCP in the network to reach the SteelConnect Manager and register at the core server.

  1. Login to the SteelConnect Manager
  2. Go to Appliances > Gateways and click on the appliance to replace
  3. Select Actions > Drop Hardware (the appliance will be migrated to a shadow appliance - no configuration will be deleted)
  4. Within the Shadow Appliance, click on Actions again and select Register new hardware (do not click Add Appliances)
  5. Enter the serial number of the new appliance
  6. Replace the existing hardware with the new appliance in your infrastructure
  7. The unit will obtain an IP address and connect to the SteelConnect Manager to get the existing gateway configuration

Scenario 2 (initial provisioning via USB stick)

[Condition]

The new gateway is NOT able to obtain an IP address via DHCP in the network, e.g. the existing gateway has only PPPoE or static IP address uplink/s configured.

In this case the new gateway will not be able to get the configuration automatically, because it cannot reach the SteelConnect Manager via DHCP.

  1. Login to the SteelConnect Manager
  2. Go to Appliances > Gateways and click on the appliance to replace
  3. Select Actions > Drop Hardware (the appliance will be migrated to a shadow appliance - no configuration will be deleted)
  4. Click on Actions again and select Register new hardware
  5. Enter the serial number of the new gateway
  6. Create a config backup of the new gateway appliance via Actions > Download Config
  7. A config file named with the serial of the gateway will be downloaded
  8. Apply the file on a FAT32 formatted USB stick
Other file system types (Linux ext2,3,4, NTFS, etc) are not supported
  9. Replace the existing hardware with the new appliance in your infrastructure
  10. Wait until the new appliance powered up correctly before plugging in the USB stick
IMPORTANT: The gateway will NOT mount the stick during boot up time, due to this the config will not be imported
  11. Plug in the stick to restore the configuration
  12. The gateway will be able to connect to the SteelConnect Manager with the previous set up configuration

Scenario 3 (initial provisioning via USB Tethering)

[Condition]

The new gateway is NOT able to obtain an IP address via DHCP in the network, e.g. the existing gateway has only PPPoE or static IP address uplink/s configured. A mobile phone (Android/IOS) is available to connect the new appliance via USB tethering to the internet.

  6. Replace the existing hardware with the new appliance in your infrastructure
  7. Wait until the new appliance powered up correctly before plugging in the phone's USB cable
  8. Connect the mobile phone via USB port of the gateway and enable USB tethering on the phone
IMPORTANT: ensure that you use a USB cable which has all pins are assigned (no charging only cable).
  9. If there is no connect on the data pins, the gateway cannot establish a tethering connection.
  10. The USB interface will automatically used as a backup uplink for the gateway, which will be able to connect via mobile network to the SteelConnect Manager and download it's configuration.
