Is there any difference between Riverbed Modeler Academic Edition and Riverbed Modeler? What are the feature limitations in the Academic Version of the software?

Solution

Riverbed Modeler Academic Edition 17.5 is a stripped-down version of Modeler intended for universities using simulation software for networking courses. This academic release features the following highlights:

  •  Free for all users (registration required)
  • Replaces IT Guru Academic Edition 9.1
  • Based on Riverbed Modeler version 17.5 PL6
  • Built-in Wireless capability
  • 6-month renewable license
  • Community support for users
  • Supported on Windows only

Some of the restricted capabilities in Riverbed Modeler Academic Edition compared to Riverbed Modeler 17.5 PL6 include:

  • No specialized models support e.g. LTE, UMTS, WiMAX, SITL, etc.
  • Limited maximum number of total nodes (80), Mobile nodes (20), Core nodes (20), and events (50 Million) in a simulation run. (Note: Core nodes are wired devices connected to at least two other devices in the network)
  • Cannot be bundled with additional module licenses e.g. RASM, FLAN, etc.
  • No process and node editors. Only the project editor is available (IT Guru like)
  • Model tainting: Models used in the Academic Version cannot be opened in commercial Modeler.
  • Different license scheme. Registration required for each installation with no support for a floating license server.
  • Cannot configure detailed simulation runs e.g. multiple seeds

This version of Modeler is mostly meant for university teaching. University research users who need to use the full feature set in Modeler can still contact the university program for more information on the procurement process.
